The Last Connection

When Daniel’s train stopped outside York, he was not worried at first. His connection to Edinburgh left in fifty minutes, and delays on this line were usually short. Then the driver announced a signal failure. After half an hour, nobody knew when the train would move.

Across the aisle, a woman named Priya was following the same route. The last Edinburgh train would not wait. She found a coach leaving from York at nine, but its remaining seats were disappearing quickly. Mobile reception came and went, so they worked together: Daniel entered passenger details while Priya held her phone near the window to keep a signal.

They booked the final two seats. When the train finally reached York, the coach station was a twenty-minute walk away and departure was close. A railway employee heard their problem and arranged a taxi paid for by the operator. They reached the coach with two minutes to spare. The journey took longer, but Daniel arrived before his morning conference—and gained a friend who now sends him travel warnings.
