Two Invitations

Jade had promised to attend her friend Noor’s photography exhibition on Thursday. The same afternoon, her manager offered her a place at a small industry dinner. Jade hoped to change careers, and several people she wanted to meet would be there. Refusing felt like wasting a rare opportunity; missing Noor’s first exhibition felt disloyal.

Instead of inventing an excuse, Jade called Noor and explained honestly. The exhibition opened at six, while dinner began at eight across town. Noor suggested that Jade come before the official opening, when the gallery would be quiet. Jade could see the photographs and help check the labels before leaving.

The plan worked until a delayed bus threatened to make Jade late for dinner. Noor ordered a taxi as a thank-you for the help. At dinner, Jade made one valuable contact, but she was even more pleased that she had not hidden the conflict from her friend. They both learned that keeping a promise does not always mean following the original plan exactly.
