The Missing Metric

Команда превращает разногласие в проверяемое решение.

At Monday’s product , Lena proposed removing a little-used reporting feature. Maintaining it took two engineers several days each month, and customer interviews suggested that most users preferred a simpler dashboard. Victor, the sales director, objected immediately. His largest prospect had mentioned the feature twice, and he believed removing it would weaken an important deal.

The discussion became tense because they were answering different questions. Lena focused on current usage; Victor focused on future revenue. Rather than insisting that one measure mattered more, their manager asked each person to state what might their view. Lena wanted proof that prospects considered the report rather than merely attractive. Victor wanted to know whether maintenance genuinely delayed more valuable improvements.

They agreed on a two-week experiment. Sales would ask five prospects to rank the feature against three alternatives, while engineering would record its actual maintenance cost. They would also offer the large prospect a lightweight exported report. Two weeks later, only one prospect ranked the original feature highly, and the export met that company’s needs. Victor supported retiring the feature gradually, provided existing customers received clear . Lena accepted the condition and thanked him for exposing a gap in her initial . The disagreement had not disappeared; it had become a decision they could test.
